About
Sanja Fidler is an associate professor of computer science at the University of Toronto and VP of AI Research at NVIDIA, where she leads the Spatial Intelligence Lab in Toronto. Her research sits at the meeting point of computer vision and graphics, covering 3D reconstruction, 3D content generation and simulation. Her lab's current work focuses on teaching AI to understand and create 3D worlds for robotics, autonomous vehicles and content creation.
Known for
- Leads NVIDIA's Spatial Intelligence Lab in Toronto as VP of AI Research
- Co-founding member and affiliated faculty of the Vector Institute
- Canada CIFAR AI Chair, renewed in 2023
- Best Paper Award at SIGGRAPH Asia 2023
- Her lab developed 3D Gaussian Ray Tracing, which handles real camera effects such as wide lenses and rolling shutters
Key points
- Argues AI now needs 3D spatial understanding comparable to what language models do for text, as a basis for robots working in physical spaces
- Favors combining coarse physics solvers with generative world models rather than relying on either approach alone
- Sees physics based video generation, with force and touch information, as the next key step for world models like Cosmos
