Known for
- Co-created PyTorch and led it for about eight years, to the point where it is used across the large majority of AI work
- Named CTO of Thinking Machines Lab in January 2026
- Contributed to influential generative model research including DCGAN and Wasserstein GAN
- Home robotics research with NYU collaborators, including Robot Utility Models that open doors and drawers in unseen environments without finetuning
- Gave the ICML 2024 keynote on making open science win
Key points
- Argues open models spread opportunity widely, but need a shared way to collect user feedback across many front ends to keep pace with closed models
- Argues human and organizational limits, not technical ones, will stop a few large companies from dominating every AI vertical
