About

Timnit Gebru is a computer scientist who researches AI ethics and algorithmic bias, and she is the founder and executive director of the Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR), an independent, globally distributed research group focused on community-rooted work. DAIR's current projects include the Data Workers' Inquiry, where people who train and moderate AI systems study their own working conditions, and she has a forthcoming book, Deep Unlearning.

Known for

  • Co-authored Gender Shades (FAT* 2018) with Joy Buolamwini, which measured large accuracy gaps by skin type and gender in commercial gender classification systems
  • Lead author of Datasheets for Datasets, which proposes standard documentation of a dataset's motivation, composition, collection process and recommended uses
  • Co-authored the 2021 FAccT paper On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots, which examines the costs and risks of ever larger language models
  • Co-founded Black in AI in 2017 and founded DAIR in December 2021
  • Named a 2026 Right Livelihood Award laureate for challenging concentrated power in AI

Key points

  • Argues that framing AI as an existential risk draws attention away from accountability for unreliable systems that companies are deploying today without safeguards
  • Argues that AI is a marketing umbrella term that blurs together distinct technologies with different properties
  • Argues that bigger web-scraped datasets amplify existing biases rather than adding diversity, and that datasets should be curated with archival principles
